What is a Zine?
A zine is a small, self-published booklet or magazine, made by hand & created for self-expression rather than profit.
Historically zines are linked to punk scenes, feminist movements, queer communities, political activism and fan cultures - giving voice to communities that are often silenced, ignored or misrepresented by traditional media.
Zines are informal and experimental, mixing writing, drawing, collage, photography, handwriting and found materials. They do not need to look polished, their rough, personal style is part of their charm.
Start your Zine
There are no rules… which sometimes makes it tough to start. Here are some prompts if you need a jumpstart
• What are you absolutely obsessed with right now?
• What is inspiring you right now?
• What is beautiful/mysterious to you? What brings you joy?
• Is there a topic/thing/subject you want to connect with others through?
• What is something you know a lot about?
• What is something you don’t have an opportunity to talk about in any other part of your life?
• What is something you want to speak up against?
• What is one thing you think everyone should know?
Zines don’t need words… they can just be images.
